Winter's NOT here yet!

The blogs and tweets are all lighting up with reports of huge snowfalls, winter arriving early, and people getting stoked and psyched. Sorry to pop the balloon here, but as this photo I took yesterday evening at Lac Passy shows, there is just a dusting on the high mountains, and no more. Indeed we had more snow in one exceptional snowfall back in mid July. I really is time to come to our senses. I know the London Ski Show is just around the corner, but the lifts don't open until the week before Christmas, and especially in this economic climate I think there is a real risk that idiots shouting their mouths off about non existant conditions will do more harm than good. Some of the most guilty are ski companies, who have the most to lose when their clients lose faith in their bleets. Blogs and social media are brilliant for sharing information, but let's regain a sense of reality here. We had the same amount of snowfall in the Alps two weeks earlier last year, and the winter that followed was the driest for 30 years. I'm not suggesting the same will happen again, but let's wait for the real snowfalls, and just enjoy this amazing autumn until then!
